How the strategy of Blyk matches with the personal and social characteristics of mobile phones

At the Emerce eDay 2008 I got to see a presentation by Marko Ahtisaari, responsible for Branding and Design at Blyk. Blyk is the new mobile network for 16 to 24 year olds, soon to be entering the continental European market. It links customers up with brands they like in exchange for free minutes. In this essay I will describe a connection I noticed between 2 characteristics found on mobile phones, personal and social, that are reflected in the strategy of Blyk.

Creating online brand awareness

Offline based brands seem to struggle in creating online brand awareness with cool micro-sites, while their online counterparts don’t seem to have much trouble in the viral web 2.0 world. In this article I approach the topic of creating online brand awareness from a traditional perspective; taking a look at how awareness fits in the brand equity model, how it compares to traditional media and what’s the way to go in the quest of creating the ultimate online brand awareness.

AJAX just as bad as Flash

Everyone knows that AJAX is cool and that your site should have at least some little AJAX effects. It doesn’t matter if it’s truly Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. As long if it looks like it is… Wait, that reminds me of something. Wasn’t this exactly what happened with Flash years ago? You where cool if your site had moving buttons and a nice long intro. Similarities: visuals where more important then usability.
